How to Set Up a Brooder for Baby Chicks
Chesapeake Farm & Hatchery – Preston, Maryland
Welcoming new baby chicks to your home is exciting, but the key to raising healthy, thriving chicks starts before they arrive. A properly prepared brooder provides a warm, safe, and stress-free environment so your chicks can settle in quickly and grow strong from day one.
Choose the Right Brooder Container
Use a sturdy container such as a large plastic tote, stock tank, kiddie pool, wooden box, or commercial brooder. Walls should be at least 12–16 inches high to keep chicks safely contained. Add Safe Bedding Use pine shavings, hemp bedding, or paper towels for the first couple of days. Avoid cedar, newspaper, or slippery surfaces that can cause leg issues.
Provide Proper Heat
Maintain a temperature of 95°F during the first week, reducing by 5 degrees each week. Use a securely fastened heat lamp or heat source and turn it on at least one hour before chicks arrive.
Fresh Water and Electrolytes
Provide clean water immediately and consider adding electrolytes for the first few days. Use shallow waterers or add marbles to prevent drowning, and always show chicks where to drink by gently dipping their beaks.
Feed Chick Starter
Offer a high-quality chick starter feed from day one. Avoid treats or scratch grains during the first week to ensure proper nutrition.
Allow Time to Rest
After travel, chicks may be sleepy and less active. This is normal. Warmth and hydration will help them recover quickly. Encourage Gentle Socialization After they have settled, handle chicks gently and speak softly to help them become calm and friendly adult birds.
Monitor Temperature Through Behavior
Chicks that are cold will huddle, while overheated chicks will move away from the heat source. Comfortable chicks will be evenly spread and quietly active.
Prevent Pasty Butt
Check chicks daily for any buildup near the vent. If needed, clean gently with warm water and dry thoroughly.
Keep the Brooder Clean
Remove wet bedding daily, stir shavings, and fully replace bedding regularly. Clean feeders and waterers often. Provide Adequate Space
Allow about half a square foot per chick initially and increase space as they grow.
Keep the Brooder Secure
Protect chicks from pets, eliminate drafts, and ensure heat sources are safely secured.
With the right setup, your chicks will thrive quickly and confidently.
