The Light Brahma is a breed that commands attention. Majestic in size, striking in appearance, and remarkably calm in temperament — these birds were once called the "King of All Poultry," and it's easy to see why. If you want a flock centerpiece that's also a reliable winter layer, the Light Brahma delivers.

Why backyard keepers love them:

  • 🥚 150–200 medium brown eggs per year — steady layers that often continue producing through winter when other breeds slow down
  • 🪶 Striking black and white plumage with feathered legs — a regal, eye-catching bird that stands out in any flock
  • ❄️ Superior cold tolerance — their large size and dense feathering make them one of the most winter-hardy breeds available
  • 🐓 Gentle and calm — one of the most docile large breeds, easy to handle and great with children
  • 🌿 Dual-purpose heritage breed — their impressive size makes them an excellent table bird as well

What to expect from Chesapeake Hatchery chicks:

Our Light Brahmas are selected for correct type, feathered feet, and the signature calm Brahma temperament. Chicks are vaccinated for Marek's Disease and backed by our live arrival guarantee. Like all Brahmas, they are slow to mature but well worth the wait.

Weeks to first egg: 28–32 weeks
Egg size: Medium
Egg color: Brown

The King of All Poultry — reserve your Light Brahma chicks for the next hatch.

Chick care overview

Brooder temperature: Start at 95°F for the first week, reducing by 5°F each week until fully feathered.

Food & water: Offer chick starter feed and fresh water immediately. Dip each chick's beak gently into the water on arrival to encourage drinking.

Hydration boost: We include hydration supplements in your shipment — add to water for the first 24–48 hours to help chicks recover from transit.

Space: Allow at least 0.5 sq ft per chick in the brooder for the first few weeks.

Watch for: Huddling under the heat source (too cold), panting or moving away from heat (too warm). Active, spread-out chicks are happy chicks.
