A basket of blue, chocolate and terracotta eggs is one of the best parts of keeping a backyard flock. These breeds lay eggs in colors you will not find at the grocery store.
Breeds by egg color
- Blue: Cream Legbar (auto-sexing chicks) and BBS Ameraucana
- Dark chocolate brown: French Black Copper Marans, some of the darkest eggs of any breed
- Dark terracotta, often speckled: Welsummer
- All of the above: the Colorful Egg Basket bundle
Building a colorful egg basket
Pair one or two colored-egg breeds with a white layer like the White Leghorn and a brown layer like the Rhode Island Red, and every collection run looks different. Egg color can vary from hen to hen and gets lighter over the laying season, so expect a range of shades. Colored-egg breeds usually lay about 150–200 eggs a year.
